Breanna Bercegeay is an artist that grew up in the small town of Gonzales, Louisiana where tradition, community and good food runs deep. Bercegeay completed her Bachelors Degree in Visual art + Design with a Concentration in Sculpture from Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond, Louisiana. She is currently pursuing a Masters of Fine Arts in Studio Art with a concentration in sculpture from the University of Mississippi in Oxford, Mississippi.
Bercegeay is in search of a beauty found within weathered materials primarily found within the Louisiana region, which is rich with different textures and imagery. Material choice comes from an admiration for objects left behind while her process consists of working in a more reactionary state. She collects pieces of driftwood and fabricates metal to mimic the lines left from the water, as if taking a photographic still of what happened. Material is very important, in terms of process, as it is crucial in relation to place and industry. The dialogue between wood and metal is in direct correlation of humanity and environment and how those things interact with one another. This leads into the conceptual idea of her work. The discovery of true admiration of a place and the endurance of the community is the underlying and guiding factor for her artwork.
In her personal life, Bercegeay lives for launching her boat into the Amite river and taking a ride on Sundays. Her favorite sounds are listening to the sway of the bald cypress trees, chirping crickets and the wake sloshing against the dock from passing boats. However, this only happens if her fiancé and two large dogs aren’t begging to stay inside. She enjoys cooking and eating cajun food, but only if someone else does the dishes. If she could, she would vow to never do laundry again. Those overalls, though, they never seem to to stay clean.
